Board Development: Building Effective Boards
If you are a board executive, a member of a board or a perspective board member, then you are the perfect candidate for the Leadership Development: Building Effective Boards program.
This leadership development program of the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, will provide you with valuable information and insight into the inner workings, functions and responsibilities of a community board as a whole, and its individual members. It includes an introduction to the Policy Governance model developed by Dr. John Carver.
Those who have served on a board can attest to the fact that there is a need for clarification of a board's responsibilities. Board members often leave meetings feeling that their time has been wasted and their own talents and expertise under-utilized. Some boards tend to micro-manage, while others are more passive. There is an ideal between these two extremes, and this program will guide you in that direction. You will leave with a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the board, executive director and staff. Whether you choose to implement all or some of the principles, your board will become more effective.
Topics covered include: board member accountability, the importance of being policy driven, consistent and coherent governing, the importance of one board voice, fiscal and legal responsibilities, making the most of your time, board interaction with CEO and staff, effective CEO action and board self-assessment.
