YP Perspective: Why You Should Hire an Intern or Two

Posted by: Pulse Young Professionals on Wednesday, July 2, 2014
Why are internships important? As young professionals already established in the “real world”, we’ve heard plenty of reasons from past college professors, counselors, speakers, and maybe even our parents, as to why accepting mostly unpaid gigs is essential to gaining valuable experience and building our resumes. As someone who did this throughout her schooling, I can certainly attest to the benefits. But what about from an organizational standpoint? How, then, are internships important? 1. Test drive the talent. Hiring interns is the best way to see what’s out there in terms of current talent in your industry. Instead of just interviewing a potential full-time employee, hiring an intern allows you to see every aspect of his or her work ethic, creativity, personality, and more over a course of a few months. If they mesh well with your company culture, then you may have a new full-timer on your hands. 2. Enhance your operations. It’s a no-brainer, but if you’re still contemplating an internship program consider this: a few fresh faces in the office can bring with them a multitude of new ideas, perspectives, and skills. Not to mention, interns want to learn and be engaged. Hire them to perform real tasks and carry out real projects instead of fetching coffee and filing papers. It benefits them in the long run and ultimately helps your organization be super productive. 3. Give back to your community. Greenville is booming with positive accolades. For example, it was ranked as one of the best cities in the nation for young adults (Thanks Forbes!). Why not keep this going? By hiring interns, from South Carolina or out-of-state, you can help enrich our local workforce. After giving interns the opportunity to network with fellow young professionals in the area and explore what the city has to offer, these individuals are going to fall in love with Greenville and will want to return as permanent residents. A few do’s and don’ts of hiring interns: Brainstorm the internship positions and develop job descriptions. Utilize internship hiring websites and/or regional university career sites to rope in applications. Use what you’ve got to your advantage. For example, if you’re a small business, advertise an exclusive hands-on experience in the field. What it boils down to is your company gaining momentum, securing some potential new employees, and adding to the community’s growing economy. Hire an intern today, make a difference tomorrow! Lindsey Pfrommer is the Sales Manager for Liquid Catering, the Upstate’s only special event bartending company. Previously the company’s summer 2012 intern, she was hired on full-time in 2013 upon graduation from Indiana University. Although Lindsey is from the Midwest, she enjoys exploring Greenville and the Southeast. Lindsey is currently a member of Pacesetters and the Talent Committee.
