7 Habits You'll Spend Your Lifetime Trying Not to Break

Tim Pecoraro considers himself a leader, a communicator, and an artist. Overall, he’s a self-proclaimed “idea guy” (he even puts that on his business cards). He serves as the Creative Director for theideagroup, which is also the Greenville Chamber’s 2013 Minority Business of the Year. At this month’s Friday Forum, he spoke on “7 Habits You’ll Spend Your Lifetime Trying Not to Break.” His main message is this: spend your life not breaking habits, but making habits you’ll try not to break. He gave seven key habits to focus on: #1: Recognize and pursue your purpose.

Pecoraro advises we realize, embrace, and then maximize our potential. Only then can we find our true purpose in life. To tap into our potential, we should stop trying to do everything, and stick to those few things that are tied to our purpose.

#2: I am only one, but I am one.

When practicing this habit, we recognize our own self-worth and use that power to realize our full potential. Pecoraro suggests we tell ourselves, “I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can.”

#3: Spend more time remembering why.

Too often we forget why we’re even doing what we’re doing. Pecoraro describes this phase as just trying to tread water and stay afloat without remembering that we actually love to swim. When practicing this habit, tell yourself, “I remember why I chose to do this” and make sure that your actions are in-line with your purpose.

#4: Never be afraid to ask for help.

In Pecoraro’s experience, asking for help was often viewed as a weakness. However, he’s learned to embrace the philosophy that collaboration is the admission of weakness. He advised on the great impact a mentor can have on one’s life. In choosing a mentor, he says to stop trying to find someone that is like us, but rather someone with a different background and unique set of experiences from whom you can learn.

#5: Choose collaboration always.

We are strongest when we work together, using our individual strengths to succeed as one. Don’t lose sight of being in partnership, he says. “Part of collaboration is not necessarily bringing the most to the table, but bringing quality.”

#6: Live life to the fullest.

BE PRESENT. He says to live life to the fullest, but only as it pertains to your life’s purpose- not a reckless disbandment of your purpose. He advises you get stuck in the moment- if you’re having tea with a colleague, have tea. Don’t sit on your phone checking your email constantly. Be present. He says his most successful meetings are when both he and the client are fully present, actively listening to one another.

Pecoraro has dedicated much of his life to making a difference. You don’t have to take big action to make a difference, but even the little things can have an impact. Pick an area of your life you’d like to improve and start there. Remember that you are here with a purpose. Use that purpose to make a difference.
