Under the leadership of Darian Blue, the Phillis Wheatley Center offers a 10 week summer camp for 13-18 year olds. During the second week through the eight week of summer camp, each Monday the youth travel to a venue/location to learn about the who, what, where, when and why of that industry/organization. The group will receive a tour of the facility, meet organizational leaders and share in a day-long learning experience as designed by the host organization. Youth will leave the tour having been given a project to work on for completion by Friday of that same week working in teams. On Friday the organizational leaders they interacted with on Monday will travel to the Phillis Wheatley Center and the youth will present their projects. The goal is to try to align the experiences with the STEEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Math). The opportunity for the Greenville Chamber is to cover the Entrepreneurship category by shaping a meaningful learning experience for the youth. The ultimate goal is to impact approximately 30 youth with exposure to inner workings of a chamber of commerce and entrepreneurship. Through this experience, the hope is to seed the idea that owning a business can be within reach. We also want to give the youth an opportunity to meet with several business owners and understand their journey. The week long experience will consists of motivational presentations by business leaders, tours of minority owned businesses and the NEXT Innovation Center, panel discussions with minority business leaders, comprehensive group project assignment “Shark Tank” style, coaching throughout the week provided by successful business leaders, and a culmination celebratory event. During the culmination event, students will present their projects and individuals on the winning team will receive a $100 Visa Gift Card each. The day will end with a celebratory reception to acknowledge the efforts of all involved.
The Greenville Chamber is honored to participate in this important endeavor that will help shape the lives of young people in our community. We are grateful to our investors and other stakeholders that have joined with us in support of this event to serve as presenters, sponsors, and coaches. Stay tuned to a post event follow up blog where we share more about the experience.
