The purpose of the Greenville Chamber’s Hispanic Business Council is to more effectively assist Hispanic business leaders in business development opportunities and growth to drive economic inclusion and diversity in chamber investment and engagement. The Greenville Chamber endeavors to effectively engage the Hispanic business community in a way that meets the unique needs of Hispanic business owners, but also works to fully integrate Hispanic businesses leaders into the inner workings and offerings of the Chamber. In this series, we will highlight different members of the council and what they do to enhance our community.

Ramon Nieves became involved with the Greenville Chamber when he started his business 9 years ago, and now he serves as Chairman of the Hispanic Business Council. He would like the business community to know as a council, their intention is to connect more Hispanic business owners with the business community. “We are always looking for more ways to engage and have an open dialogue,” he states. He is also Principal of UniComm Media Group where he provides the branding and strategic marketing expertise necessary to harness the power of a multicultural approach for his clients. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Ramon understands the importance of the different cultures represented in our region and how to effectively build meaningful relationships between them to elevate brands.

When asked what challenges he believes face the Hispanic Business Community, he identified three: business education, mentorship/guidance and access to capital. He coupled that with advice for success, “Really focus on why you are starting your business. The ‘why’ was so important when starting my business because it went beyond making money and focused on making a difference in the marketing industry while telling others about the Hispanic community.”

“Greenville showed me how great it is to do business here. I was ready to go back to Puerto Rico, but God showed me a different path. I realized how large the Hispanic community in Greenville was and how much need there is here.“ An avid community advocate, Ramon currently serves as Vice Chair of the United Way of Greenville County’s LatinosUnited Leadership Group, a board member for Fall for Greenville, and he is on the Chamber’s Pulse Marketing Committee. He enjoys giving back because it is part of his “legacy-building goal.” In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Alicia, and enjoying a great movie.
