MBA Spotlight: JoAnne LaBounty, Spartanburg Meat Processing

The Greenville Chamber’s Minority Business Accelerator Program helps accelerate the development of high potential minority business enterprises (MBEs) to strengthen and expand the regional minority entrepreneurial community. Minority Business Accelerator (MBA) is a program of the Greenville Chamber which actively seeks to improve the capacity of minority owned firms by increasing recognition of the value of minority businesses as suppliers, strategic partners, and, ultimately, as effective engines for job growth, economic development and wealth creation. MBA prepares high potential minority-owned businesses for accelerated growth and expansion through business development services, mentoring, targeted training, access to large corporations for partnership opportunities and custom roadmap to sustainable growth. MBA helps MBEs overcome growth barriers creates access to new opportunities for ethnic diverse businesses, connecting them with the right resources and results-driven strategies to fuel their growth and build capacity.

Spartanburg Meat Processing Co.

Spartanburg Meat Processing Co. was established in 1999 in Spartanburg, SC by JoAnne LaBounty. Her food processing company further processes pork, beef and chicken for retail, and provides foodservice for government or military customers. What distinguishes Spartanburg Meat Processing from their competition is their advantage in sourcing raw materials and the quality of her products. A few core capabilities of the company include cooking and chilling proteins and packaging products into retail, foodservice or bulk packages.

When asked why she decided to embark on her entrepreneurial path within the food industry she said, “To be profitable in supplying better quality products to customers.” The greatest reward for JoAnne has been experiencing success by staying with their core values of honesty, integrity and not compromising quality for quantity. With currently 80 employees, Spartanburg Meat Processing plans to increase in volume using co-packers and adds a second shift in the next five years. JoAnne is most excited about, “Establishing a clear vision for the future and having a better understanding of business facts,” regarding the MBA program. Her advice for entrepreneurs is to learn all the fundamentals about the business you want to start and study other companies that are successful because success can only be built on a strong foundation.”
