Leadership Greenville State Government Day

Posted by: Tami Miller on Tuesday, February 25, 2020

The classes of Leadership Greenville and Leadership Charleston came together for a collaborative learning experience at the State Capitol in Columbia.

In recent years as part of the Leadership Greenville experience, we have expanded the leadership network conversations across to state to collaborate with our counterpart class in Charleston. Leadership Greenville and Leadership Charleston began with a welcome from the Speaker of the House, Jay Lucas, followed by an informal meet and greet with 10 legislators, including Upstate and Lowcountry representatives. The classes then heard from a panel of reporters to discuss the role of the fourth estate in the legislative process, followed by a panel of lobbyists who shared insights into their roles and to dispel some of the assumptions and stereotypes about their role in the lawmaking process.

The classes experienced the excitement and buzz of the State Capitol building and saw our legislative process in action both on the lobby floor and in the House and Senate sessions. The classes enjoyed a networking lunch where Jason Zacher, SVP of Business Advocacy for the Greenville Chamber and George Ramsey, Senior Director of Legislative Relations for the Charleston Metro Chamber, provided a briefing on the shared legislative agenda items and Q&A. Afterwards we had an engaging and informative conversation with Justice John Few and Justice John Kittredge at the Supreme Court where they explained the judicial system. We ended our class day with a meet-and-greet with Governor McMaster back at the State House.

Leadership Greenville and Leadership Charleston left with a much deeper understanding of the governing process from every branch of government and from multiple and diverse stakeholders. They also expanded their network with business leaders in the low country to continue conversations and impact in their spheres of influence.

The Leadership Greenville Class 47 Application is now open! Be a part of your community's future and apply today.
