Modern was founded in 2016. Originally three agents working together as a team, Modern has now grown into a multi-location brokerage with offices in Anderson & Greenville. Awarded Greenville's Best of the Upstate Team in 2017, Modern was founded on the principle that real estate could be fun, innovative, ethical, & non-discriminatory. We pride ourselves on having a vastly diverse office where agents are encouraged to wear jeans, show their tattoos, and become friends and family with their clients.

Co-Founder Lee Vining, a veteran, joined the Army a few months after the 9-11 attack, where he served for almost a decade. As a result of his years spent in Iraq medical issues forced him to leave the Army and start a new career. He began helping Veterans find suitable housing, employment and explore their benefits. Through helping fellow Veterans, he realized he had a true passion for sharing the experience of home ownership. His goal is to deliver superb service by combining technology, passion and Class A customer service with every client he meets. Every client of his is treated like family and he is highly recommended by both Buyers and Sellers alike.

James Akers, Jr. graduated from The Wyatt Real Estate Institute in 2005. In 2009, James was selected as one of Greenville’s Best and Brightest 35 and under by Greenville Magazine and in 2015 was selected as part of The Greenville Chamber of Commerce's year long Leadership Greenville Class 42. In November 2013, James was named one of the Top 99 Realtors on Twitter by WebsiteBox as well as one of the 32 Most Popular Realtor’s in America by Home Buyer Nation. He has served on Greenville Forward’s Inclusion Task Force Committee as well as the Buildings & Grounds and Communications Committees at the yWca of Greenville. He is a Charter Member of Greenville Rotaract and served as the Social Media VP in 2011-2012. In 2012 he joined the Julie Valentine Center’s Run2Overcome 5k/10k Committee and later joined the Board of Directors for The Julie Valentine Center from 2012 - 2015. James served as a Commissioner on the Greenville Municipal Elections Commission from 2015 - 2017 and is currently the Chairman of the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce Small Business Policy Council.

In late 2016, James woke up during a stroke. By the time all was said and done James had survived several strokes and a week in the GHS Neurological Trauma ICU. As a result of his experience James was tapped to be the Patient Advocate on the SC DHEC Stroke Advisory Council, a council which was formed by the Legislature in 2011 to help adapt uniform policies statewide to ensure better care and a higher survival rate for those impacted by strokes. In addition, James serves on the GHS Stroke Advancement Council as well as on the board of Greenville Polo Classic which benefits the GHS Neurological Institute.

Modern recently opened a brand new location in The Village of West Greenville. Located on Perry Street in the promenade, Modern in the Village is looking forward to hosting friends and clients during First Fridays and other Village events.
