The U.S. Department of Commerce recognized the Greenville area, along with other communities in the Upstate and Midlands regions, as one of 31 Tech Hub designees through the SC Nexus consortium, a SC Department of Commerce initiative.
The selected regions were chosen from more than 400 applicants. The Tech Hubs program was authorized by the CHIPS and Science Act – signed by President Biden in August 2022. The 31 Tech Hubs selected focus on developing and growing innovative industries in regions across the country, including semiconductors, clean energy, critical minerals, biotechnology, precision medicine, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and more.
According to The White House, "The Tech Hubs will bring the benefits and opportunities of scientific and technological innovation to communities across the country."
The 31 finalists are now able to apply for between $40 million and $70 million each for implementation funding, totaling nearly $500 million nationwide.
