CALL TO ACTION: Contact Your Senators About Lawsuit Reform

Posted by: Anna Grace Galloway on Monday, February 24, 2025

As you all are aware, enacting meaningful lawsuit reform to bring stability and predictability to businesses and their customers is one of our highest legislative priorities in 2025. Without significant lawsuit reform this year, some businesses may be forced to close, while others will struggle to control costs and make cuts instead of focusing on growth opportunities.

Foundationally, S.244 is a lawsuit reform package aimed at repairing South Carolina's flawed civil justice system and addresses the insurance issues plaguing the Palmetto State, otherwise known as liquor liability. It seeks to enhance the state's economic competitiveness by ensuring that individuals and businesses are held responsible solely for the damages they directly cause, rather than being liable for the actions of others. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Shane Massey (R-Edgefield), Senate President Thomas Alexander (R-Oconee), Sen. Rex Rice (R-Pickens), Sen. Ross Turner (R-Greenville), Sen. Wes Climer (R-York), Sen. Kent Williams (D-Marion), Sen. Sean Bennett (R-Dorchester), Sen. Ronnie Cromer (R-Newberry), Sen. Larry Grooms (R-Berkeley), Sen. Allen Blackmon (R-Lancaster), and Sen. JD Chaplin (R-Darlington).

To date, the bill is being challenged by trial lawyers. The same trial lawyers you see on TV and billboards across the state have launched a well-funded campaign aimed at misleading the public, rather than engaging in a fair debate about the bill’s merits. Unfortunately, their efforts have had a negative impact that is shifting the conversation in Columbia.

But it’s not too late.

By taking just a few minutes to tell your senator you support the lawsuit reform in S.244 we can finally help provide the relief businesses desperately need sooner rather than later.

The time for excuses is over, the time for action is upon us. It’s time your voice is heard.

Tell your senator you support the framework of S.244 and the meaningful lawsuit reform it brings for SC. If your senator is a sponsor, simply thank them for their support of South Carolina businesses.

Trial attorneys are the sole beneficiary of maintaining the status quo.
