Though technically, the Greenville Drive is the High-A Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox and plays in the South Atlantic League, the Drive can more accurately be described as a microcosm…and a generator... of all that Greenville has become; a caring, wholesome, neighborly city that places a high value on community. What the Drive has created, what has been built, is more than a stadium, more than a baseball team, but a community front porch, a gathering place that has advanced the causes of students, veterans, first responders, community leaders, business leaders, in short, an enormous array of those who call the Upstate of South Carolina home.
The team’s journey began in 2006 with the completion of a stadium built as a replica of Boston’s Fenway Park. With their stadium awarded "Ballpark of the Year" in its very first season, Greenville…and professional baseball recognized from the beginning that they had something special in both the stadium and the organization. Fans came in droves. Community Nights of all kinds were implemented to recognize worthy organizations and individuals from the Upstate, from Reading All-Stars to Advanced Manufacturers, to First Responders and Veterans, not to mention events such as Friday Night Fireworks, $1 Drink Nights, Marvel Comic Night, the list goes on. The Drive has created a venue and an environment that celebrates the Upstate in a family-friendly, welcoming way helps explain why they consistently lead their league in attendance.
Going into their 20th year, the Greenville Drive has put community at the core of their mission. Though two championship trophies stand proudly in their offices, the true meaning of victory for the Greenville Drive seems to revolve around giving back, doing good, providing a venue and resources to bring the Upstate together and move it forward. The Brown Family, which founded the team after falling in love with Greenville has continually sought to enhance the game day experience as well as improve the surrounding community. The West End of Greenville has improved dramatically since the arrival of the team and the economic impact of the Drive is visible to anyone familiar with the West End pre-2006.
The Greenville Drive is a baseball team, but most of all it is a community impact agent that has helped move Greenville forward and bring the Upstate together for twenty years. The passion for excellence and for making a difference has not diminished in the slightest. which is why the next twenty years promise to be just as exciting.
