Child Watch Intern @ Life Center Y
Setting: Fitness Facility
Description: The Child Watch Intern supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Youth & Family Services Director and Program Director, the Child Watch Intern will plan and supervise the participants in the Child Watch program. This position will work directly with the parents and children’s participants.
The intern will plan and lead activities for young children, collaborate with YMCA staff and families, and develop essential skills in child supervision, customer service, and professional communication.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Provides daily activities ensuring children have multiple choices of activities and that they are provided with activity focused on movement, arts, imaginary play, reading, etc.
• Provides exemplary customer service.
• Ensures participant safety – including check-in / check-out procedures, sick children, discipline issues, and activities.
• Always maintain positive relations with members, participants, and co-workers.
• Assists in all areas of the Y operation as requested by management.
Other Expectations
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
• Attend/complete required abuse risk management training.
• Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
• Follow mandated reporting requirements.
• Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the internship, the intern will:
• Gain hands-on experience in planning and leading age-appropriate activities that support children's development through movement, arts, imaginative play, and literacy.
• Develop strong customer service and communication skills by interacting daily with parents, children, and YMCA members.
• Strengthen skills in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment by adhering to check-in/check-out procedures, risk management practices, and child supervision standards.
• Build professional confidence in a nonprofit setting while supporting the overall operations and mission of the YMCA.
Desired Skills / Coursework: This position is ideal for high school students (via the LaunchGVL program) interested in early childhood development, youth programming, and nonprofit leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Current high school junior or senior
• Interest in youth development, early childhood education, elementary/middle/high school education or YMCA operations
• The ability to be a good role model and to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to various roles.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Professional demeanor and willingness to learn.
• Possess skills in relationship building e.g. excellent communication skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Frequently moves throughout the facilities for 4 hours or more a day.
• Frequently positioning oneself to assist when needed.
• Frequently handling small items
• Constantly stationary for more than 2.5 hours per day
