Wellness Intern @ Life Center Y
Setting: Fitness Facility
Description: The Wellness Intern supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Wellness Director, the Wellness Intern will provide excellent customer service to all members, program participants and guests. This involves greeting all members and guests, booking appointments, assisting with questions regarding services and programs, organizing, maintaining, and assuring cleanliness of wellness floor.
The intern will assist with member engagement, support daily wellness center operations, and develop critical skills in communication, organization, and community-focused service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Enforcing YMCA and Wellness Department rules and policies.
• Maintain a clean, safe, fully stocked, and well-organized work area.
• Give facility tours and orientations to new or prospective members as needed.
• Actively promote the Y, memberships, programs, services, and lessons, as well as promotions and/or discounts available.
• Provide accurate, appropriate, and immediate responses to all requests by members/guests.
• Provide detailed descriptions of Y memberships, programs, services, facility features and hours of operation.
• Properly open, perform daily tasks and close wellness area each day according to Standard Operating Procedures.
• Set a good example in promptness, respect, manners, honesty and caring for all members, program participants and guests.
Other Expectations
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
• Attend/complete required abuse risk management training.
• Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
• Follow mandated reporting requirements.
• Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the internship, the intern will:
• Gain practical experience in wellness operations, including facility management, customer service, and member engagement within a nonprofit organization.
• Strengthen communication and interpersonal skills by providing tours, promoting programs, and responding to member and guest inquiries in a professional manner.
• Develop organizational skills and attention to detail through daily operational tasks such as maintaining cleanliness, stocking supplies, and ensuring safety standards.
• Build a foundational understanding of promoting healthy living initiatives and wellness services within a community-focused environment.
Desired Skills / Coursework: This position is ideal for high school students interested in exercise science, health and wellness operations, customer service, and nonprofit leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Current high school junior or senior (LaunchGVL eligible).
• An interest in healthy living and helping others reach goals.
• Ability to be detail-oriented, organize, and have ability to multi-task.
• Ability to be efficient and productive in a fast-paced environment.
• Must have enthusiasm and possess excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to various roles.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Professional demeanor and willingness to learn.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Frequently move throughout the facilities
• Maintain a stationary position for more than 2.5 hours per day.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with program participants and exchange accurate and appropriate directions.
• Frequently moves program supplies up to 100 pounds.

Other Requirements: • CPR/First Aid or the ability to obtain it (YMCA provides training, at a minimal cost for materials) • Child Abuse Prevention training to be completed within 30 days of start (training provided by YMCA), • Complete required Child Abuse Prevention, Blood borne Pathogens, and O2 training by first date of internship
