Youth & Family Services Intern (Summer Camp focus) @ Eastside Family Y_copy

Setting: Child Care Facility
Description: The Youth & Family Services Intern supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Youth & Family Service Program Director and Assistant Program Director, the Youth & Family Services Intern is responsible for providing physical, mental, and spiritual growth and development opportunities for each child; and develop and implement daily plans in accordance with age-appropriate programming through weekly themes and activities. The intern will support in planning and leading daily program activities, engage with children and families, and develop essential skills in leadership, communication, and program coordination within a nonprofit setting. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Assist in Supervising and managing groups of school age children during physical activity games, arts and crafts, nutrition lessons, etc. • Assist in Developing and implement lesson plans for program times utilizing risk management guidelines, developmental characteristics, variety, creativity, and through weekly themes and activities. • Maintain equipment and facilities and use only in an appropriate manner. • Report all program changes to Site Leader or Youth & Family Services Director. • Be prepared for program responsibilities as assigned including lesson plans, devotions, group activities, Family Events, and water activities. • Always build and maintain positive relationships with children, parents, and co-workers. • Create an environment that promotes belonging, achievement, and relationships. • Adhere to all program rules as outlined in the Staff Manual, Personnel Policy, and Code of Conduct and Risk Management Manual and any other program specific guidelines. • Assist in maintaining program standards at all times regarding Quality Check Standards and Licensing Regulations. • Assists in all areas of the Y operation as requested by management. • Maintains positive relations at all times with members, participants, and co-workers. Other Expectations • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers. • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training. • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers. • Follow mandated reporting requirements. • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities. LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the internship, the intern will: • Gain practical experience in planning and implementing age-appropriate activities that promote physical, mental, and social development in children. • Strengthen leadership and group management skills by supervising and engaging with diverse groups of school-age children in a camp environment. • Build professional communication and relationship-building skills through daily interaction with children, parents, and co-workers. • Develop an understanding of risk management practices, licensing regulations, and program quality standards within a nonprofit camp setting.
Desired Skills / Coursework: This position is ideal for students interested in youth development, education, and recreation programming. QUALIFICATIONS: • Current high school junior or senior (LaunchGVL eligible). • Interest in youth development, early childhood education, elementary/middle/high school education or YMCA operations • Interest in working with youth of all ages. • The ability to be a good role model and to adapt to changing needs and circumstances. • Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to various roles. • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). • Professional demeanor and willingness to learn. • Possess skills in relationship building e.g. excellent communication skills. WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: • Frequently move throughout the facilities • Maintain a stationary position for more than 2.5 hours per day. • Must be able to communicate effectively with program participants and exchange accurate and appropriate directions.

Other Requirements: • CPR/First Aid or the ability to obtain it (YMCA provides training, at a minimal cost for materials) • Child Abuse Prevention training to be completed within 30 days of start (training provided by YMCA), • Complete required Child Abuse Prevention, Blood borne Pathogens, and O2 training by first date of internship

Range of Hours & Days: Weekdays, 3-5 days a week, 3-4 hours a day
Range of Pay: 10.32/hr
Terms: Summer
