Youth Fitness Intern @ Prisma Health Family Y_
Setting: Fitness Facility
Description: The Youth Fitness Intern position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Group Exercise Director, the Youth Fitness intern is responsible in assisting youth fitness group exercise classes in a safe and effective manner.
The intern will assist with youth group exercise classes, collaborate with YMCA fitness staff, and develop critical skills in communication, event planning, and participant engagement within a community-focused environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Assists Group Exercise Director and Group Exercise instructors in weekly youth fitness exercise classes/programs. This includes, but is not limited to:
o Moving/setting up equipment and exercise spaces
o Assisting the lead instructor with movements
o Ensuring safety of class participants
o Cleaning equipment and/or spaces after use
o Other duties as needed.
• Works cooperatively with supervisor and fellow instructors as part of a fitness team.
• Assists with organizing, planning, promoting, and scheduling special Group Exercise events as needed.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Able to work with staff of all departments across the YMCA of Greenville Association in a positive, professional, and productive manner.
Other Expectations
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
• Attend/complete required abuse risk management training.
• Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
• Follow mandated reporting requirements.
• Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the internship, the intern will:
• Gain practical experience assisting with the delivery of youth group exercise classes, ensuring participant safety and engagement in a fitness environment.
• Develop organizational and teamwork skills by supporting class setup, equipment management, and the planning and promotion of special fitness events.
• Strengthen communication and customer service abilities through daily collaboration with participants, instructors, and YMCA staff.
• Build a foundational understanding of healthy living practices and fitness instruction within a nonprofit setting.
Desired Skills / Coursework: This position is ideal for high school students interested in health and wellness, fitness programming, and nonprofit leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Current high school junior or senior.
• An interest in healthy living and helping others reach goals.
• Ability to be detail-oriented, organize, and have ability to multi-task.
• Ability to be efficient and productive in a fast-paced environment.
• Must have enthusiasm and possess excellent customer service skills.
• Interest in youth development, early childhood education, elementary/middle/high school education or YMCA operations
• The ability to be a good role model and to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to various roles.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Professional demeanor and willingness to learn.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Must be able to constantly remain in an upright position.
• Must be able to frequently move about the facilities as well as squat/kneel and bend.
• Constantly communicate with program participants and must be able to exchange accurate and appropriate directions.
• Frequently lifts program supplies up to 50 pounds.
